November 1 – Rep. Ray Rodrigues

November 1 - Rep. Ray Rodrigues

Rep. Ray Rodrigues to present a legislative update on Medical Marijuana at the November 1 Tiger Bay Club of Southwest Florida luncheon at The Marina at Edison Ford.

Rep. Ray Rodrigues

Florida State Representative for District 76, Ray Rodrigues will share his perspective on what the legislature accomplished regarding medical marijuana during this past session.

Earlier this summer, Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed legislation to implement the medical marijuana amendment voters approved last year. Amendment 2, approved by 71 percent of the voters in November, took effect on Jan. 3 and required that laws had to be in place by July 3 for how patients can qualify and receive the drug. Scott has noted that the constitutional amendment “was passed overwhelmingly” and said the law “makes sense for our state.” The legislation also paves the way for 10 more medical marijuana treatment centers by Oct. 3, which is the deadline for the rules to be enacted, in addition to the seven already operating. The bill still bans smoking marijuana.

Join us on Sept. 29 for a discussion with Rep. Rodrigues about Amendment 2 –  does it  adequately address the constitutional amendment or is there more work to be done?  Is this just a step toward recreational use?

In 2016, Rep. Rodrigues was appointed by House Speaker Richard Corcoran as Majority Leader of the Florida House. He’s previously worked a decade for a corporate component of General Electric where he managed their U.S. Import Compliance Program. He currently serves as budget manager for the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University and previously served as an appointee of Governor Jeb Bush on the Lee County Housing Authority, held an elected office on the Stoney Brook Community Development District, and served as the Vice Chair of the Lee County Republican Executive Committee. He currently resides in Estero with his wife Ruth, and son Rhett.
